Cookie Policy
Last updated 12 October 2026
Craterline stores a handful of small items in your browser so the game works. Analytics cookies are the only optional ones, and they are only set if you say yes.
Your choice
The first time you open the game, a banner asks whether it may use analytics. Both answers are one click, and the game plays exactly the same either way. Until you answer yes, no analytics script is loaded and no analytics cookie is set. We remember your answer for six months, then ask again.
You can change your mind at any time. Choosing No thanks switches analytics off straight away and deletes its cookies.
You can also block or delete cookies and site data in your browser’s settings. Doing that clears the items below as well: the game will forget your call sign and your challenge link and, mid-match, its way back into your game after a refresh.
Strictly necessary: stored on your device
These are kept in your browser’s local storage rather than as cookies, but the same rules apply, so they are listed here. They need no consent because the game cannot do what you asked without them, and none is used to track you.
| Name | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|
craterline.displayName |
Your last call sign, so you don’t have to type it again. | Until you clear site data |
craterline.guestId |
A random id for this browser. The server uses it to count games started, and it means nothing anywhere else. | Until you clear site data |
craterline.matchId, craterline.playerToken,
craterline.resumeExpiresAt
|
Put you back into your match if you refresh or lose connection. | Removed when the match is over |
craterline.challengeLinkId, craterline.challengeSecret
|
Your challenge link, and the secret that proves this browser owns it. | Until you clear site data, or the link expires |
craterline.rotateHintDismissed |
Remembers that you closed the “turn your phone sideways” hint. | Until you clear site data |
craterline.analyticsConsent |
Your answer to the cookie banner. | Six months |
Strictly necessary: if you sign in
Only set if you choose to sign in, which is optional. These are real cookies, set by our own server; none can be read by a script on the page.
| Name | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|
craterline.account |
Keeps you signed in. Holds only our account id, encrypted. | Thirty days after your last visit, or until you sign out |
.AspNetCore.Correlation.*,
.AspNetCore.OpenIdConnect.Nonce.*
|
Protect the trip to the sign-in page and back from being forged. | Removed when sign-in finishes, at most fifteen minutes |
Analytics: only with your consent
Set only after you choose Allow analytics. They tell us how players find Craterline and where the game is confusing; the Privacy Policy says exactly what each tool collects. Advertising features are switched off in both.
| Name | Set by | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga |
Google Analytics | Tells one visitor from another. | 2 years |
_ga_<id> |
Google Analytics | Keeps track of the current visit. | 2 years |
_clck |
Microsoft Clarity | Recognises a returning visitor. | 1 year |
_clsk |
Microsoft Clarity | Joins the pages of one visit into a single session. | 1 day |
Clarity can also set cookies on its own domain, clarity.ms; Microsoft lists them
in Clarity
cookies. Google explains its own in
how Google uses cookies.
The iPhone and Android apps
The apps use no cookies and no browser storage, and load no analytics. What they keep on your phone is described in the Privacy Policy.
Advertising
None today. The ad spaces in the game are placeholders and load nothing. If we start showing ads, this page will list the cookies they use, and the banner will ask you about them separately — a yes to analytics will not be taken as a yes to ads. See Advertising in the Privacy Policy.
